The motion estimation and compensation technique is widely used for video coding applications. An efficient motion estimation plays a key role in achieving a high compression ratio. Block matching is the most popular motion estimation algorithm, which has been adopted by various video coding standards such as MPEG1/2/4 and ITU-T H.261/262/263. The full search algorithm is the most straightforward and optimal block-matching algorithm, but it is very computationally intensive. Previously proposed fast algorithms reduce the number of computations by limiting the number of search locations. In this paper, we present a very fast and efficient search algorithm that can be used in block-based motion estimation. The proposed algorithm is based on the idea of one-ata-time optimization. It is shown that the proposed algorithm produces better quality performance and requires less computational time compared against popular motion estimation algorithms.
